United is seriously screwed ._.
It's impossible to begin as to where the problems lie - thats because the problem is everywhere. Not wanting this to sound like an excuse, but the no 1 problem is injuries.
1) The engine room of the team, Cleverley and Anderson are both out, till after christmas. The 2 have formed a proficient partnership that accounted for united's attacking prowess in august
2) That partnership was not defensively sound, and this is where the defenders came in. Rio and Vidic have just returned from injury, and Vidic is injured again, for the rest of the season. Our captain, who averages the most clearances in the premier league this season, will be sorely missed.
3) Our most clinical goalscorer, Hernandez is out at least until Christmas, Welbeck and Young have just returned from injury and Berbatov is injured
More than half the first XI is injured or have just returned from injury. This affects the fluidity of the team adversely.
The next problem is an inability to turn chances into goals. United have been dominating possession, but somehow are unable to convert them into goals. The majority of their previous games has seen them scoring only 1 goal a game. There seems to be an over reliance on Hernandez and now that he is injured, Jones has stepped up to score the goals, like a modern day Beckenbauer. However, being a defender by nature, he will not be able to carry the team.
THIS IS WHERE ROONEY YOUNG AND NANI MUST IMPROVE. Or be sold off.
Rooney has not scored in 9 games for United, and most of the blame must go to him.
However, we must examine the reason he has been unable to score. There is a lack of through-balls or crosses for him to latch on to. This is where the blame goes to Nani and Young. Renowned for their ability to beat a man and cross a ball, their crossing lately has been dismal. In one game, Young attempted an outrageous 12 crosses, but none were successful. Nani loves to beat his man, but WHAT COMES NEXT? He promptly gives the ball away with a poor pass/cross or loses the ball to a tackle. There is no end product. If he does not raise his game, he will never be half as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.
From the 6-1 trashing to being booted into the Europa League, United has endured a tormenting time. What they need now is a overhaul of the team.
This is what I feel should be the new United XI that SAF should look to be building. In this case, the average of the team would be less than 23, with Sneijder and Rooney being the oldest. When Pogba is ready, he will fill Sneijder's role.
Rooney-Hernandez
Young-Cleverley-Sneijder-Nani
Fabio- Smalling/Evans- Jones/Evans- Rafael
De Gea
In the case of any injuries, the team that would take over:
Macheda-Welbeck-Diouf
Anderson-Carrick-Fletcher
Evra-Rio-Vidic-Fryers
Lindegaard
All we can do now, is hope for the best and win the EPL, beating the noisy neighbours.
I ate.
